Friar’s Corner: Choose Life with Jesus

Isaiah 53:10-11;
Psalms 33:4-5, 18-20, 22;
Hebrews 4:14-15;
Mark 10:35-45

This week we look at another dimension of Jesus’ ministry on earth. The Isaiah text is near the end of the fourth and last “suffering servant texts” of second-Isaiah. He was one of the four major Old Testament prophets.

Jesus offered his life for the atonement for the sins of the entire human race. He stood in the place of the sins of humanity. Why? So all people are invited into the blessings of belonging to the kingdom or family of God.

The gospel of Mark today ends with Jesus saying the Son of Man (God) came “to give his life as a ransom for many,” Mk 10:45. Many humans so far do not know Jesus and many even knowing him, have not accepted his sacrifice on the cross for them.

Trust Jesus

Let us continue to accept what Jesus has done for us and as Psalm 33 says, “We place our trust in him.” We call on Jesus’ mercy on us. Mercy means his great love for us. “May your kindness, O lord, be upon us who have put our hope in you.” Amen.

This week’s section of the Hebrew letter speaks of Jesus as our High Priest, knowing our human weakness. He endured his suffering to bring us into his friendship, to receive his power and go out into the world as his hands and heart of love caring for others.

St. Teresa’s Prayer

This October 15th we celebrated a great Carmelite nun’s, St Teresa of Avila. She and St. John of the Cross taught us much in the development of our prayer life getting closer to God in our daily lives. These thoughts of St. Teresa are amazing and invoke much thought and encouragement to vote correctly.

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes with which he looks with
Compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
…Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Pray, study, fast, vote pro-life

Pray, study and fast for this coming mid-term election. Commit yourself to vote. How and for whom would Jesus vote? Study the pro-life candidates in your area. I think that is the major issue in this election. The number of unborn humans murdered each year in our country is staggering. The amount of our tax dollars that go to fund the Planned Parenthood clinics, the “abortion mills” to murder fellow human beings who have God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, is also staggering. That must stop and now.

Our vote is critical to help Jesus bless his littlest ones. Please don’t turn away from Jesus. Commit yourself to be his faithful disciple in this fight of good and love vs evil and death (murder).

May Jesus fill your mind with his message of service for our fellow Americans. Let’s help Jesus make the USA a better and happy country to live in.

Blessings,
